Basic Information
This is a Wolfenstein total conversion (TC) based on 3D Realms' Duke Nukem 3D engine. The current version is 6.1 and is construed of 2 episodes and 20 levels with new graphics and sounds.
According to the author of this add-on, this project originally started off as a direct port of the two Wolfenstein levels in DOOM II but gradually turned into a total conversion. It seems to be designed after the original Wolf game with some alterations.
The current version of Castle Dukenstein works with the 1.3 version of the Duke Nukem 3D game and will not work properly under ver.1.4 nor version 1.5.
The author says he is working on the 1.5 version of this TC.
Concerning gameplay, the secrets are very hard to find unless you already know where they are. An useful tip would be to go to the secret level in between level 1 and level 2, or otherwise you'll find yourself crying for more ammunition. Aside from this, you shouldn't find the difficulty level too hard.
As all Wolfenstein TCs on advanced 3D engines are, this one too, employs PC Wolf graphics. So, the graphics are very blocky. Too bad, but it's inevitable. Mac Wolf only has the front angle of each sprite whereas the PC Wolf has eight angles. You need more than a single angle to make an advanced TC.
I guess the brightness and lightness in colouring come from the difference in the 256 colour palette that each of the two games employs.
Tips concerning Download
There are three files you must download to play this TC. They can all be found in the author's webpage.
In his page, the author especially cautions us about the "DS-61.TXT" file included in ver.6.1 having some errors in it. The "DS-61.TXT" is contained inside the file you download as "DS-61-1.ZIP". After unzipping, the author tells us to delete this "DS-61.TXT" file and download "DS-61a.TXT" instead.

Tips for play on the MacHow to start the game
The problem is that though Duke add-ons are for the most part Mac-compatible, there are still some obstacles that Mac users must overcome before we can use such add-on files which were basically designed to be played on PC machines. Mac users have to know a litttle tip to solve this problem. Here's the tip.
1. Download the Dukenstein file from the net.
2. Expand the file. Make sure it's in a folder.
3. Change "wolfdefs.con" to "DEFS.CON"
4. Start game by dropping folder on Duke icon.
5. Choose "NEW GAME" and click the uppermost
?? radio-button.In this way, you can play the Dukenstein scenario from Level 1 to 7 consecutively. From Level 8 (file name: DS-50-8.map) and on you'll have to play each level seperately by choosing the user map.
How to make Duke jump!
The Dukenstein add-on was designed for play on ver.1.3 of the PC Duke, but the Mac Duke happens to equal the 1.4/1.5 versions on the PC platform. Therefore, using the custom "USER.CON" file in the default Dukenstein set frequently interferes with your gameplay. Usually what happens is that though you can play the game you find yourself not being able to jump! In such cases the following tip might be useful.
1. Make a copy of the custom "USER.CON" file.
2. Open the copy with an editor/word processor.
3. Find stringline "define RUNNINGSPEED 53200".
4. Insert "define GRAVITATIONALCONSTANT 176" ??directly after it as follows. (Remember to keep the
??empty line intact):
From define RUNNINGSPEED 53200
define PLAYDEADTIME 120
To define RUNNINGSPEED 53200
define GRAVITATIONALCONSTANT 176define PLAYDEADTIME 120
5. Find stringline "gamestartup".
6. Find word "RUNNINGSPEED" to the left of that
?? line.
7. Place cursor behind the "D" and type in a space.
8. Type "GRAVITATIONALCONSTANT".
9. Replace original "USER.CON" file with new one. Please don't forget that not everything works all the time. Crashes are risks you've got to take when a Mac user fools around with add-ons made for the PC.
How to change the "DEF.CON" file to ver.1.3
If your Dukenstein does not have a "DEFS.CON" file, you can make one by slightly altering the one included in Mac Duke. Make sure to make a copy of the original file before you alter it.
1. Find and make a copy of the "DEFS.CON" file.
??(location: Duke Nukem 3D/Duke files).
2. Open the copy with an editor/word processor.
3. Find stringline "// define SPACESHUTTLE 487".
4. Delete first three digits "// ". (The third is a space)
5. Find stringline "// define ENDSEQVOL 3SND1 27".
6. Delete first three letters "// ". (The third is a space)
7. Save the file. This doesn't always work, nor does it work for all, but usually it helps a lot.
