A Wolfenstein TC for "Duke Nukem Forever"

Only screen currently in the official website

To start with...

This page is about an awesome Wolfenstein TC project that once existed but seems to have been put away for some reason. Maybe the announcement of Gray Matter Software's new "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" interfered with the authors. Maybe it was the delay of Duke Nukem Forever's release that discouraged the authors. Whatever the reason, there is now but a single page and a single screen left on the former-official website of theirs at Planet Unreal (the site was originally at Unreal Nation). They have only written "One Day (Perhaps)" for their release D-Day, which should pretty much mean it's discontinued and abandonned.

This is really heartbreaking because it was such a great project. The graphics were superb, and the story was rather cute but excellent! My sorrow will not change despite the fact that the project was a strictly PC oriented one. Although the author had interest in the Mac version (see below), for some restrictions, he used the PC version sprites in his project.

I wonder if Duke Nukem Forever itself is really ever going to come out. In such case, a Macintosh version would be very nice...

The information and graphics that I will put in this page comes from the last copies of the webpages I took when it still existed fine. Basically, the following text will be a basically unchanged quote of the original website. Of course, some words will be mine.

General Info

This is an add-on for 3D Realms' upcoming game, "Duke Nukem Forever". It also requires the full version of id software's Wolfenstein 3-D to run. Unreal is being used at the moment to make the add-on since Unreal is partly compatible with Duke Nukem Forever.

Plot

It is up to Duke Nukem to save the world again... this time he has to stop the world being overrun by video game Nazis from Wolfenstein 3-D.

26-1-00 : New screenshot

I've just been taking it easy lately. Well anyway, I've released a new screenshot which shows sprites with perspective, partial lighting and fog. The level shown came with Unreal and it's called "Gateway".

6-12-99 : About MacWolf

I bought a second-hand Mac version of Wolfenstein 3-D from ebay.com a few months ago, and now I've gotten my hands on a Mac. Hopefully I'll get around to reviewing it sometime. But basically, the music quality is excellent, there are 2 new weapons and the textures are 128x128 as opposed to the PC's 64x64. But all of the enemies are always facing you. Since it doesn't have 8 views of the enemies, I think I'll still use the PC version's graphics. Also, the Mac enemies look fairly different to the PC version sometimes, and they didn't include the Hitler ghosts.

23-11-99 : Site moves to Planet Unreal

The Wolf3D for DNF site has been redesigned and has moved from its old home at Unreal Nation to Planet Unreal.

The Screenshots

I'm very sorry that I have lost the original-sized large screenshots. I only managed to recover the thumbnail versions of them. You'll still be able to see the atmosphere the project had, though.

  • Estimation on why this project was dropped

Actually, it seems that the Wolf3D TC for Unreal received the direct negative intervention of id Software and was forced to change their name. This eventually brought down the whole project.

As a consequence, some (or maybe many) people are getting upset about id, believing that they are exercising power against the free development of games and computer techniques. Some even ill mindedly guessed that this was an extention of the Unreal/Quake debate. Well, I don't think so.

Wolfenstein 3D is a registered trademark of id and was proven as a sure hit maker. If a company doesn't protect their trademarked and copyrighted materials, they might as well go public domain and lose every single bit of its rights to profit from the games they've actually created through their hardwork. So id cannot just let anyone go calling their stuff Wolf 3D.

I believe that id doesn't mind TC creators making Wolfenstein 3D based projects on their own game engines like the Wolf3D mod for Quake, Wolfenstein Resurrection for Quake II and WolfenDoom for Doom II . If the Wolf TC is built upon another id engine, then the players of that TC would need and id game to play it, hence benefitting id all the same. But if the TC is built on another company's engine, that means the benefitters would be people of other firms and not id. This means that id has every damn right to defend its trademarks and copyrights.
